Description
This facilitated discussion explores the emerging model of Compassion Focused Psychosexual Therapy (CFPT)introduced by Vosper and colleagues (2023), which integrates principles of Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) into psychosexual treatment. Grounded in
evolutionary psychology, attachment theory, and affect regulation models, CFPT emphasizes compassion as a core therapeutic stance to address shame, self-criticism, and emotional dysregulation that often accompany sexual difficulties.
Participants will examine how compassion-based strategies can enhance traditional psychosexual approaches, particularly in clients whose experiences of shame, anxiety, or relational trauma inhibit sexual functioning. The session will invite reflection on clinical application, theoretical integration, and potential implications for future research and practice.
Attendees are encouraged to read the article in advance and come prepared to engage in an open discussion about how compassion-focused frameworks might transform the therapeutic process for individuals and couples facing sexual concerns.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will be able to Identify and describe at least three core components of Compassion Focused Psychosexual Therapy (CFPT), including its grounding in evolutionary psychology, attachment theory, and affect regulation models, as outlined by Vosper et al. (2023).
- Participants will be able to Analyze a minimum of two clinical scenarios in which shame, self-criticism, or emotional dysregulation contribute to sexual difficulties, and evaluate how compassion-based interventions can be applied to enhance psychosexual treatment outcomes.
- Participants will be able to Compare and contrast CFPT with traditional psychosexual therapy models and identify at least two ways clinicians can integrate compassion-focused strategies into existing therapeutic frameworks while maintaining ethical, culturally responsive, and evidence-informed practice.
