There are many ways to do couples therapy, and several distinct models that have been used successfully. This presentation will look at the different models, what is effective about each, and how they are similar and different. The presenter will describe his own approach to couples therapy, with emphasis on improving communication and conflict resolution. The content will be about 30% didactic, 20% Q&A, and 50% demonstration/experiential.

- Compare and contrast at least three models of couples therapy (similarities and differences)
- Describe how to address three causes of defensiveness leading to escalation of arguments between couples.
- Specify six rules of communication that can be taught to most couples to reduce conflict.
- Demonstrate the ability to teach effective communication skills to couples.
