Webinar Description
This presentation will provide psycho-education to psychotherapists about the nature and ramifications of societal crisis upon clients they serve, and in particular, the Corona Pandemic. Presenters will include Barry S. Horowitz, LCSW-R and Dr. Norman Blumenthal, Ph.D. Those in attendance will learn concrete methods helping those in crisis through methods such as modeling self-care; providing perspective and increasing interpersonal connection to increase resiliency and maximize healthy coping patterns. Additional emphasis will be placed upon the importance of therapist's awareness of their own signs of burnout and compassion fatigue, which strongly hamper the effectiveness of clinical care for the clients they serve. The presentation will include opportunities for questions-answer period and it will be presented via teleconference so as to increase availability to greater numbers of therapists while also responding to the important social distancing sensitivities and realities of those partaking in the training.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify 3 variables related to the Corona Pandemic that may impact therapist and client well-being.
- Identify 3 variables related to the Corona Pandemic that can impact the effectiveness of therapy for the client.
- Report familiarity of 3 factors/techniques that they will consider using in their care of clients impacted by the Corona Pandemic
Agenda:
1. Introduction and clinical resources for therapists and clients. (5 Minutes)
2. Personal case study and introduction of sample clinical complexities facing individuals, families and communities from the Corona Virus. (10 minutes)
3. Overview of impact of trauma and crisis on individual, family and community functioning. (10 minutes)
Including: Affect Disregulation; Loss of Hope/Despair; fear of illness; Decreased Sense of Attachment and Support; Decreased Routine and Predictability.
4. Overview of complexities and impact of co-occurring client and therapist crisis upon effective therapeutic process (10 Minutes). Including impact of transference and counter-transference in relation to themes of concern for safety; support and protection; availability and fear of loss; continuity of services; etc.
5. Introduce and review 3 therapeutic techniques and narratives that aid in desensitization and emotional regulation in response to crisis. (15 minutes)
6. Questions and Answers to process and integrate the information provided.
