Consensual non-monogamous relationships have become increasingly visible in recent years within Western culture. While monogamy remains a deeply meaningful and fulfilling choice for many, therapists are also encountering more patients who are exploring or practicing non-monogamy.
This course is designed to provide therapists with foundational knowledge of the terminology and frameworks of non-monogamy, an introduction to the various forms of consensual non-monogamous relationships, and basic tools for supporting patients in this area.
Throughout the course, we will explore how to establish agreements within non-monogamous relationships and how to address clinical themes such as disclosure of non-monogamous involvement, sexuality in non-monogamous contexts, asymmetry and imbalances across relationships, working with jealousy, and managing harmful relational patterns in non-monogamous dynamics.

- To distinguish between personal attitudes and professional attitudes toward consensual non-monogamous relationships.

Lesson 1 - Introduction to the OPIC Model (Orientation, Practice, Identity, Community Belonging); types of consensual non-monogamous relationships; demographics and correlates of non-monogamy; mono-normative assumptions in therapy; considerations for and against opening a relationship. The lesson will include a group discussion on attitudes toward non-monogamous relationships.
Lesson 2 - Choosing the relationship structure that best fits; disclosure of non-monogamous involvement to one’s social environment; key topics of discussion and guiding principles for creating agreements in non-monogamy; sexuality in non-monogamous relationships; discrepancies across different non-monogamous relationships; asymmetry between partners in the practice of non-monogamy; working with jealousy; addressing harmful relational patterns in non-monogamous contexts.
