Research indicates that resilience and Emotional Intelligence (EQ) are better predictors of future success than an IQ score. As a result, schools have begun to incorporate social emotional learning programs (e.g., school based DBT Curriculums) into their curriculum to teach EQ skills. The benefit of implementing these programs in the classroom is extensive. The students spend large amounts of time in school; and therefore, can learn a multitude of skills. School personnel can be easily trained in the curriculum and the programs have the ability to be tailored to each school's specific cultural needs.
This 3 hour webinar will look at ways that we can work with teachers and the school systems to implement best practices for helping children learn resilience and achieve success
Qualifications:
Nina Kaweblum, LCSW, DBT-LBC™, MA, MEd is a Linehan board certified DBT therapist. In addition to her private practice in Lakewood, NJ, she works as a certified School Social Worker in West Long Branch, NJ (Bet Yaakov of the Jersey Shore) where she has taught DBT skills from first through twelfth grade. Nina is intensively trained by Behavioral Tech in DBT as well as in DBT-A (adolescents), DBT-C (children), DBT-PE (trauma), and DBT-SUD (addictions). In her private practice, she works with adults, adolescents, and explosive and oppositional children. Malkey Wallerstein is a certified DBT and DBT-A therapist at Pesach Tikvah Family Services, trained by leaders in the field; Drs. Charles Swenson, Kelly Koerner and Jill Rathus. Malkey has over three decades in the field of education at the elementary, high school and adult educational level in the New York TriState area. She has combined her education and experience to consult and train school staff and bring skills classes to students
Learning Objectives:
- To be able to adapt concepts of DBT to various grade levels.
- To be able to define and explain DBT concepts to school staff, especially teachers for use in schools.
- To be able to role play DBT based adaptive responses to improve student behaviors.
Agenda:
1. Overview of the concept of "Consulting Parenting" (consulting with parents before and during course of providing therapy for children) and how that concept can be carried over to school personnel.
2. Overview of research regarding relationships between skills training and resilience, and how it can positively impact EQ and future mental health. Overview of various social emotional programs and school based skills training programs, especially DBT in Schools.
3. Nina Kaweblum will present her model of how she adapted DBT in Schools Curriculum for grades K-12, and adaptations for different grade levels.
4. Malkey Wallerstein will present various options for therapists to provide support to teachers and school support staff in order to generalize skills in the school environment for greater impact and long term effectiveness.
5. Role plays will be offered to attendees to provide examples of using DBT concepts in school settings, e.g. dialectics, non-judgemental language, validation, DEAR MAN, etc.
