Description
Now that you have established a relationship to the conceptual underpinnings of Sensate Focus and have a sense for the “method to the madness” when it comes to diagnosis specific progressions, it will be beneficial to deepen your learning via individual practice. This can be accomplished several ways:
- Review the material below from Overcoming Anxiety in Sex and Relationships. The material is worded in an approachable way so as to make it directly translatable for/to our clients.
- Rehearse out-loud prescribing the back and front caress. Notice where you get stuck or struggle. Practicing on our own helps our brain to meaningful store the instructions in longterm, durable memory, particularly if we rehearse with specific couples or individuals in mind (aka, placing the instructions in client-specific context).
- Practice the individual front caress on your own, with yourself, 2x a week for two or three weeks. Taking time to truly sink into these experiences with and for yourself helps us understand how dynamic and rich the method is on a personal level. Engaging with this experience multiple times will illustrate how the mind and body adapt, illuminating new information with repetition, illuminating different experience - emotionally, physically, and psychologically.
