This session explores how psychosexual and relationship therapy is shaped by the modality in which it is delivered, offering insights relevant to both experienced practitioners and therapists in training. Using examples from work with individuals, couples, and groups, we will examine how key psychosexual and relational presentations, such as intimacy challenges, trauma responses, desire and arousal concerns, and compulsive or out-of-control sexual behaviours, may surface differently in online and in-person contexts. Participants will consider how therapeutic presence, non-verbal communication, safety, and emotional regulation are affected by the environment and how these factors influence both process and outcome.
Alongside the clinical considerations, the session will address practical and ethical challenges faced by therapists at all stages of their development, including managing confidentiality, boundary-setting, technological barriers, and the complexities of working with sensitive material across varied settings. We will identify opportunities unique to each modality and explore strategies for strengthening attunement, maintaining engagement, and enhancing therapeutic effectiveness. By the end of the workshop, both trainees and qualified therapists will be equipped with a clearer framework for adapting their psychosexual and relational work confidently across virtual, in-person and hybrid models.

- Identify and describe at least three ways psychosexual and relationship presentations differ between online and in-person therapy across individual, couple, and group work.
- Assess and articulate key risks associated with each modality, such as confidentiality, boundary challenges, and technological limitations, and explain how these risks may impact clinical practice.
- Compare and evaluate the benefits and limitations of virtual and in-person therapy by analysing case examples or clinical scenarios presented during the session.
- Demonstrate the ability to apply at least two modality-specific strategies that enhance therapeutic safety, attunement, and effectiveness when working with psychosexual and relational material.
