Class 1
10:00 AM - 1:00 PM EST
Bridging the Divide: Practical Tools for Mental Health Practitioners in Polarized Times
As mental health professionals we have skills and experience in helping clients understand and tolerate difference in their intimate and extended relationships. Remembering to use those skills when one is experiencing moral outrage is not easy. How do we help our clients deal with their "inner polarizer?" How can we as clinicians deal with our own inner polarizer so that we can remain non-judgemental in session?
In this age of extreme polarization, one of the hardest things for us and most people is to listen to people whose core beliefs we do not share. What happens when someone loves or cares about others, yet does not like or respect parts of them? What if one finds the core belief systems of others in our countries to be abhorrent?
This webinar is participatory. All people can all use the support of community. There will be mini-lectures, break-out rooms, video clips of interviews with top therapists who are experts in dealing with warring couples. We will watch master therapist, Bill Doherty, coach couples who are troubled by political differences.
(Trainer - Cheryl Dolinger Brown, LCSW, has been practicing as a psychotherapist in New York City for forty years with individuals, couples and groups in addition to presenting workshops/webinars and supervising therapists. She has trained in Imago Relationship Therapy, Somatic Experiencing, PACT, Doherty Approach including Discernment Counseling and The Tapping Method.)

Class 2
1:45 PM - 4:45 PM EST
The Hidden Potential for Suicide: Perfectly Hidden Depression (3 CE Credits)
Many people are raised to believe that expressing painful emotion is a sign of weakness or that being emotionally vulnerable is far too unsafe. Emotional survival often came by creating a defensive strategy - that of a perfect-looking life. In this groundbreaking presentation, Dr. Margaret Robinson Rutherford, author of Perfectly Hidden Depression; How to Break Free From the Perfectionism that Masks Your Depression (New Harbinger Publications, 2019) will discuss the symptoms of this overlooked “silent” depression.
Dr. Rutherford, will discuss early research on perfectionism that noted its connection with depression, as well as the difference between constructive and destructive perfectionism. Suicide trends will be discussed as well as their correlation with destructive perfectionism. Dr. Rutherford will also present more recent studies revealing three types of perfectionism that have been discovered by research and their unique potential for lethality. Dr. Rutherford will present her work on the ten core traits of Perfectly Hidden Depression and will discuss the treatment model she's defined, using mindfulness, cognitive/behavioral, family systems approaches and more, guiding the patient toward greater vulnerability, and thus relief from the burden they've been carrying.
(Trainer - Dr. Margaret Rutherford, a clinical psychologist from Fayetteville, Arkansas, hosts a highly popular podcast, The SelfWork Podcast, consistently ranked in the top 50 of US mental health podcasts. Her column in Psychology Today and her book, Perfectly Hidden Depression; How to Break Free From the Perfectionism that Masks Your Depression (New Harbinger Publications, 2019), focuses a much-needed light on the dangerous link between destructive perfectionism and depression)
