This workshop provides a comprehensive introduction to conducting effective clinical intakes with sex therapy patients, emphasizing the integration of the PLISSIT Model into early therapeutic interaction. Participants will explore the structure and function of intake sessions, learn strategies for initiating conversations about sexuality, and practice gathering the nuanced biopsychosocial and psychosexual data necessary for accurate assessment and treatment planning. Through guided instruction, sample intake forms, structured discussion, and interactive role-plays, learners will develop the confidence and competence to ask sensitive questions, establish rapport around sexual concerns, and apply PLISSIT-based interventions from the very first session. Emphasis is placed on ethical practice, cultural humility, and the therapist’s ability to create a safe, non-judgmental environment where patients feel comfortable sharing intimate details essential to their care.

About the Presenter:
Caleb Jacobson is an internationally recognized clinical psychologist, sex therapist, and Bible scholar. He holds a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) degree in clinical psychology and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Hebrew Bible, biblical archaeology, and psychological exegesis. In his clinical practice, Dr. Jacobson specializes in working with religious and conservative patients, treating male sexual dysfunction, and addressing rare and problematic sexual issues. A pioneer in the integration of sex therapy and religion, he is the author of the award-winning Sex Therapy with Religious Patients: Working with Jewish, Christian, and Muslim Communities (2024) and the editor of The Routledge International Handbook of Sex Therapy and Religion (2025). Dr. Jacobson currently serves as president of both the School of Sex Therapy and the International Association of Psychosexual Therapists, where he leads initiatives in education, research, and clinical advancement within the field.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the core components of an initial clinical interaction and explain how therapist communication, presence, and framing influence patient comfort during early discussions of sexual concerns.
- Demonstrate strategies for establishing rapport with sex therapy patients by using culturally responsive, non-judgmental, and affirming communication techniques.
- Apply the PLISSIT Model during intake sessions by identifying when to introduce sexual-health questions and distinguishing between Permission, Limited Information, Specific Suggestions, and Intensive Therapy in early encounters.
- Conduct a structured clinical intake with sex therapy patients by gathering relevant biopsychosocial and psychosexual information and organizing it for assessment and treatment planning.
- Evaluate the role of ongoing assessment in sex therapy by recognizing how information obtained throughout the initial session shapes diagnostic impressions, treatment goals, and ethical decision-making.
